70 indie stylist Volume 4 Issue 1 THE PROTOCOL THE CUT: EMBRACE LAYERS Reshape your layering game this summer. "Layering adds shape, enhances volume, and frames the face for each of your clients," says Justin Toves-Vincilione (@ahappyjustin). According to Toves-Vincilione, summer is all about being seen. Layering the hair removes weight, shortens length around the face for updos, and completes a night-out look. So, who needs layers? There are so many haircut trends now involving layers. You can offer this style of cutting to any guest who wants to add drama to their look, but also take time to consult with your more conservative clients. "Not every style has to be retro-inspired or ultra-layered. There is a perfect length, technique, and nished style for everyone," says Toves-Vincilione. Create the Look • Start with a thorough consultation. Ask your guest to provide inspiration photos if they have any. • Face-map to determine the best length for the client's fringe, face frame, and layers. • Re ne and make the technique your own. Pull inspiration from hairstyles you love, and have a nished result in your head. • Finish your layered look with elevated styling techniques. • Demonstrate and recommend your favorite products. Don't forget to share! "I can't wait to see all the layering trends on social media and how everyone—my clients and yours—rock their nished looks," says Toves-Vincilione. Hands in the Hair Elevate all areas of your summer hair skills with these cut, color, texture, and style how-tos from the Ulta Beauty Design Team Pro tip: Build a layers portfolio to inspire your work and to share with guests.
