Inspired by my life experiences thus far, I wrote a picture book about a little pig named "Peblet" losing her rst tooth. There were typos every other word, and looking back, I'm fairly sure the entire story was one long sentence. Despite its many faults, this book was my beacon of success. I knew from that moment on I was destined to write. I can only imagine you've experienced this too. There was a special "aha" moment that told you a career in hair was what you were destined for. I'm willing to bet you had another "aha" moment when you gured out the one thing you're exceptionally good at. Maybe it's vivid rainbow dye; maybe it's sew-in extensions; maybe it's formal styling. I'm here to let you know that whatever gives your career purpose is your superpower. Allow me to introduce you to the 2023 AHP Indie Stylist of the Year: Courtney "Beauty" Smith. Her superpowers of luxury extensions and color led her from struggling to make it to building her own business and making it to the $100K club. You can read all about her inspiring journey in our Q&A on page 44. Whether you specialize in cuts, color, extensions, brows, or something else, you deserve to celebrate your uniqueness in this ever-growing industry. On page 52, you'll nd Sonna Brado's feature all about fringe—determining your client's best look, navigating different face shapes, and cutting different types. Give your client something extra special to remember with a refresher on scalp massage on page 58. And, of course, even your best services can't be complete without successful communication. On page 64, nd out how your body language can speak louder than your words. You might not think of yourself as a superhero in the traditional sense of the word. But you have the skills and creativity to make your career something that allows you to shine. So go forth and share your superpower with the world.
