72 indie stylist Volume 4 Issue 1 THE TEXTURE: LOW- MAINTENANCE, PROTECTIVE STYLES Summer is the perfect time to let your curls out. "In humid areas, the weather provides natural moisture for skin and hair, so curls are naturally happier," says stylist Bianca Donahue (@biancad.beauty). But taking good care of every hair texture is a year-round goal, and braids are among Donahue's favorite low-maintenance styles for summer. "Whether cornrows or box braids, they offer amazing protection and tons of versatility in styling," says Donahue. It's always a good idea to give wavy, curly, and coily hair breaks from the daily manipulation Hair by Bianca Donahue for Ulta Beauty Design Team of combing and brushing, to prevent damage or breakage. These styles are ideal for anyone who loves a creative style that can last. Create the Look • Divide hair into six sections, starting with a mohawk section on top, using the brows as a guide for width. • On both left and right sections, create a diagonal part to further separate hair in half. In each of the side sections (four total), create a three-strand braid, or cornrow, from the hairline to the center nape. • Within the top mohawk section, create three horizontal subsections, 2–3 inches apart. These will be the ponytails at the top of the head. Secure each with an elastic. • Lightly wrap the end of each subsection ponytail counterclockwise around its base. • After manipulating the hair into your preferred shape/style, use small hair pins to secure the ponytail to its base. Repeat for the remaining top subsections. • The last section is the back of the mohawk. Repeat the last two steps or add hair extensions. Customize the Look • Add extensions to create drama. • Instead of leaving out curls in the ponytail, braid or twist the hair for a more detailed look. • Instead of a braid, try a two-strand flat twist. • Use hair jewelry to make the braids stand out. "Summer hair is all about wash-and-gos and braids." —Bianca Donahue
