54 indie stylist Volume 4 Issue 1 I consider there to be five essential bangs techniques that every stylist should have in their toolbox. With these techniques, you can master any type of fringe your client may want. Based on classic technique and adaptable to a multitude of face shapes, these are the essential bangs techniques: • Curtain fringe • Side-swept fringe • Heavy fringe • Blunt fringe • Choppy/micro fringe Of course, the most popular of these over the past few years has been the curtain fringe. Curtain fringe can be worn either long or short and has been the fringe of choice for clients who love long balayaged hair as well as clients getting the shag haircuts that are so popular right now. But as our clients change, their hair changes and their fringe changes. WHAT'S NEXT? So where are we headed now? I see us moving toward heavier, more pronounced fringe—whether it's side-swept fringe or heavy fringe. I knew it with the debut of the streaming series Wednesday, a supernatural show featuring Wednesday Addams from The Addams Family. And sure enough, we're beginning to see clients wanting more bangs and a heavier look and feel to their style. It's the natural cycle of things: We crave change and evolution in our hairstyles, and one thing naturally leads to another. As a new generation starts coming into the salon, they will want something different from their parents' style—kind of like the "skinny jean, side-part" meme that is popular right now. But now, it's all about wanting a different type of bangs. In order to either create a new fringe on a client or update their current style, I ask myself these questions: • How does the client present themselves and what is their style expression? • What is their face shape? • How much hair will create their fringe? • Will the fringe be a stand-alone cut or will it blend into the rest of the style? WHAT'S THE CLIENT'S PERSONAL STYLE? First, it's best to examine what the client's personal style looks like. This can also include elements that influence their personal style, such as their age, their profession, and their lifestyle. Consider which one of the following categories their style best fits into: • Soft and Sexy. This type of look will go best with curtain fringe or side-swept fringe. wellington cunha/pexels
