IS: Tell us about the inspiration behind the name Lumos Nox Salon. TJD: Traveling around and teaching at salons, you hear all these diff erent names. I wanted something that people would recognize and intrigue them. e name Lumos Nox was this cool, built-in marketing, being very millennial-coded. I love the idea of how Professor Snape seems like this bad guy, but he's really helping Harry Potter. He resents him, but he's doing his best to help. Unfortunately, this has become a hot topic over the last few years—J. K. Rowling (the author of the Harry Potter series) coming out as being anti-trans has been a blow to us in the fandom and a blow to us as a salon, because we are so big in the LGBT community in our area. . . . ere was a point where we felt we had to make an announcement to the community that none of our money goes to her. We don't support her. We're confused by her actions. We still love the message of Harry Potter. So that has been a little bit of a struggle. I'm sure I'll have a rebrand eventually, but I like the original idea, so I would want to move forward with the rebrand with that idea of light and dark. "When my husband passed away, that time was so dark, and I wanted to give up on everything. If I didn't have people helping me run the business, I would have given up on it for sure."
