WHAT CHARGING LIKE A PROFESSIONAL LOOKS LIKE Charging like a professional is not emotional, it's strategic. It means knowing your numbers, not guessing. Not copying someone else's pricing sheet. Not adjusting based on fear. It means building pricing around sustainability rather than anxiety. It means A PERSONAL WAKE-UP CALL I was recently on location for a project. During conversations with other stylists, I learned that some were charging four times what I was charging for the event. Four times! Here's the thing: My rates are solid. ey align with industry standards. ey reflect my experience, the amount of travel I do, and the level of professionalism I bring. But hearing those numbers made me gasp, then pause. I asked myself: • Was there a disconnect? • Were some stylists overcharging simply because it was a major event? • Were others undercharging out of habit? • Where was the line between specialty pricing and opportunism? at moment forced me to evaluate. Special events can absolutely warrant specialty pricing. Travel, time blocks, exclusivity, and demand all factor in, but professionalism still matters. Charging four or five times your base rate without clear reasoning can feel reactive instead of strategic. So, I did what professionals do: I sought feedback. I spoke with other stylists. I gathered perspective. I even put out a poll on social media to hear from those actively navigating similar pricing shis. e responses were telling. One social media user, Ashley Nicole (@AshleyNicole.ceo), shared that properly compensated pros feel fulfilled aer a service. She emphasized pricing that GETTY IMAGES You can be passionate and still undercharge. You can have extraordinary skills and no pricing strategy. The shift happens when you gently challenge your own thinking.
