30 AHP Indie Stylist Volume 7 Issue 1 INFLAMMATION AT THE ROOTS Inflammation is oen the quiet driver behind many scalp complaints. Oxidative color, bleach, fragrance- heavy products, and microbiome shis can all trigger inflammatory pathways. Niacinamide helps quiet inflammation and soothe skin. On the scalp, that means less itching, less reactivity, and more comfort aer and between services. It's not a medical treatment, but it can offer support when the scalp feels irritated. OIL WITHOUT OVERCORRECTION e scalp contains a high concentration of sebaceous glands. When the barrier is compromised, oil production oen becomes unpredictable. In my case, the scalp kicked into overdrive and, though I tried to keep my shampooing schedule to twice a week, my hair told a story that made it seem it hadn't been washed in months. My cute style was more slick than shag, which wasn't the goal. My instinct was to soak it up with dry shampoo or wash it sooner. Unfortunately, aggressive stripping can lead to rebound oil production and an ongoing cycle of imbalance, and I know better. Niacinamide works differently. It helps regulate sebum output rather than suppress it. By improving barrier integrity and calming inflammation, it supports a more balanced oil pattern. For me, this was one of the most noticeable shis. I knew more cleansing or more dry shampoo wasn't the answer. Instead, I broke out my hats and cute headbands and began using a niacinamide- based scalp serum. As my barrier stabilized, my scalp no longer felt greasy and tight. Balance was restored, and I stopped scratching like a puppy. ENERGY, FOLLICLES, AND HEALTHY HAIR Hair follicles are metabolically active structures. ey require energy and a stable microenvironment to function to their full potential. Because niacinamide contributes to NAD+ production, it supports cellular energy systems involved in repair and resilience. While it's not marketed as a hair-growth stimulant, supporting the energy and integrity of scalp tissue creates conditions that support healthy hair growth. When we stop thinking only about clean roots and start thinking about scalp health, everything changes. BRINGING NIACINAMIDE INTO PRACTICE Niacinamide is a great fit for clients who live in the color chair. If they're lightening regularly, frequently covering grays, or stretching highlights, the scalp is working hard behind the scenes. It's also a solid option for anyone who says, "My head gets itchy before my next wash," or "Why are my roots greasy but my scalp feels tight?"
