50 indie stylist Volume 3 Issue 1 Use fear to fuel success. "My advice to women—and all those who identify as female—is to use your fear as fuel to propel you toward your goals. Fear is an illusion that challenges your insecurities, and you must overcome that fear at all costs. Otherwise, you may find yourself stuck on the sidelines as opportunities pass you by." Know how to stand out. "As a woman, there are so many things to consider if you plan to set yourself apart from the rest. First is your presence in the room. It's important to stand tall and radiate confidence in every aspect—from your outfit to your body language, the tone in your voice, and the way you interact with others. Secondly, know what's relevant, stay educated as the expert in your field, and let your personality shine. And finally, observe and listen. Pay attention to the chatter and movement in the room." Ironically, embrace the "boys club." "There is a lot you can learn from your colleagues, especially from a male perspective, which I believe to be one of the benefits in working in a sort of 'boys club.' But, to be taken seriously, respect must be earned, and trust needs to be gained. I've noticed that to receive networking collaborations, you have to prove to be worthy of such a privilege. This means you have to engage, showcase, participate, be hands on, join panel discussions, etc. This is probably one of the biggest challenges for some women, because you can't be shy or scared to fail." Ignore the haters. "When I made it my mission to be known in the industry, I became laser focused on establishing my career as a respected, well-rounded barber. I invested all my money and time into competitions and barbering events—all while being homeless. I never told anyone about my struggle. I didn't want anyone feeling sorry for me.
