58 indie stylist Volume 2 Issue 4 @bleachfuzzz Megan Trivette Jasper & Jade Studios Why do you love what you do? You can be flexible with your time and have the unique opportunity to make as much money as you'd like to. If it grows, I can cut it, and that opens so many doors for me. I'll always be able to use my craft, no matter where I am. That's not only job security, it's also freedom! Where do you find inspiration? My clients inspire the hell out of me! They keep me on my toes. But watching another hairdresser I respect and admire, who teaches me new skills and gives me ideas, is still the thing that inspires me most. Continuing education is also an important part of my creative process. What kind of self-care do you do to avoid burnout? For me, it's setting clear boundaries. I don't text after business hours or schedule on my days off to ''squeeze someone in.'' I also try to travel or have something nice planned for myself once a month to keep motivation high and have something to look forward to outside of work. What advice would you give to newly licensed cosmetologists? I was taught this when I first entered the beauty world, and I will never forget this because it's the absolute truth: Fake it until you make it. Keep improving your craft while doing everything you can on every person in your chair as if you're the best damn hairdresser on the planet. Stay hungry and motivated and treat every conversation you have with the client in your chair as if it's the most important conversation you've ever had in your life. Why do you like being an AHP member? I just love the people who work within the company. They love hairdressers and want to take care of us. Why should other hairdressers or barbers join AHP? Disasters happen, whether it be with your clients or your very expensive tools. Nothing protects you more than an insurance plan. It's the responsible thing to do, and AHP has plenty of added perks you wouldn't be able to get with any other company. Which AHP benefit do you like the most? The fun parties they have! During quarantine they had an online celebration for all licensed professionals. They had a beauty trivia contest, and I won a year of Boss Babe School with Elizabeth Faye. How else do you use your skills/license? I am also an educator for an extension company called Hotheads. Educating is incredibly rewarding, but since COVID has become a part of our lives, in-person education hasn't been as prevalent. I'm hoping that changes soon. i a m a h p
