56 indie stylist Volume 2 Issue 4 What Does it Mean to be a Hair Pro? There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what it really means to be a hair professional. Have you ever considered what professional means to you? You should. The definition of a hair professional is somewhat personal, but the core elements that every professional should possess are specialized knowledge, skill competency, honesty and integrity, respect from peers and clients, accountability for one's actions, and a professional code of ethics. How do you define your professionalism? Your list should start with belonging to a professional association and protecting your career. Let's start you off with dispelling a few myths. THE MYTH: I don't have time to belong to a professional association. THE TRUTH: Yes, you do! Being the member of an association ups your pro factor considerably, showing peers and clients that you pay attention and care about your industry. And the time commitment on your part can be negligible. As an AHP member, you can invest as much or as little time as you choose interacting with the benefi ts we off er. The great news is, our resources are available online and our dedicated membership service team is available Monday through Friday to answer all of your questions. THE MYTH: Hairdressers and barbers rarely have accidents or injure their clients. THE TRUTH: Rarely is not the same as never. In fact, on average we have approximately 250 active claims per month. We live in a very litigious society. Not all claims are valid, but wouldn't you want the experts on your side fi ghting for you—your license, your reputation, and your livelihood? THE MYTH: I don't need to pay for continuing education—I get it free on YouTube. THE TRUTH: As we say in the education business, you get what you pay for. At AHP, we carefully vet and curate content so we know you're getting quality education. And we acknowledge your continuing education ambitions by giving you a certifi cate of completion post viewing. 1 3 2
