60 AHP Indie Stylist Volume 6 Issue 1 THE HOW: STEPS TO PLAN AND EXECUTE A SUCCESSFUL PHOTO SHOOT Planning and executing a photo shoot can be boiled down into five steps, from brainstorming to selecting the final images. Step 1: Brainstorm and Conceptualize Every photo shoot starts with a vision. Ask yourself: • What story do I want to tell? • Is this just for fun or is it for a purpose? • Who is my target audience? • What skills or services do I want to highlight? Sometimes, the hardest part is coming up with an idea. Creating a mood board will help you through the process of conceptualizing. A mood board is a visual template that gives you the freedom to ideate. Typically, mood boards incorporate a collection of images, objects, or textiles (specifically sensory or design-oriented). When I work through my creative process, it is more than collecting images on Pinterest. Pinterest is a great tool, but you really want to draw ideas from multiple sources. e goal is to find meaningful inspiration as a starting point. Maybe that means playing some music, taking a walk outside, or visiting an art gallery. is will also help you create a color scheme, clarify your vision, and serve as a reference for your team. Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Monitor trends within the fashion and beauty industries. Pick up a magazine and tear out pages that inspire you. You can draw from memories, cultural heritage, or a personal journey. Fresh perspectives are nice but be mindful of who you share your ideas with. If they aren't someone you take advice from, don't accept criticism from them either. Step 2: Assemble Your Dream Team Photo shoots can be a collaborative effort. Always vet your collaborators. Review their portfolios, set clear expectations, and make sure they're as committed to the success of the project as you are. ere's nothing getty images
