Curl Pattern
Determining your natural hair client's curl
pattern is critical to the success of their
appointment. In cosmetology school, many
of us were taught there are four patterns:
straight, wavy, curly, and coiled. As the
natural hair movement has evolved, so has
the chart of patterns. It now incorporates
subtypes: straight hair types are 1A–1C;
wavy hair types are 2A–2C; curly hair
types are 3A–3C; and coily hair types
are 4A–4C. Most natural texture clients
fall into the chart from 2C, which can be
wavy, all the way to 4C, which is tightly
coiled. It is possible for one client to have
multiple curl patterns, but my advice
would be to cater to the majority pattern
present. If the client has more 3C hair
than 4A hair, cater to the 3C. If it's fairly
equal, cater to the tightest curl pattern.
