18 AHP Indie Stylist Volume 5 Issue 1 Cosmetology Compact Gains Interest Across the Country by Lance Hostetter ADVOCACY AHP A few years ago, cosmetology leaders gathered to discuss the importance of portability—the ability for licensed professionals to practice across state lines. e overwhelming sense was that an interstate compact would provide an essential benefit to the profession. Fast-forward a few years and the Cosmetology Licensure Compact (known as the Compact) is gathering momentum across the country. By late April, when this issue of AHP Indie Stylist went to publication, four states had adopted it and another seven had introduced bills to do so. So, what does this mean for you? e Compact will simplify interstate cosmetology practice and regulation with the goal of reducing unnecessary burdens related to licensure by endorsement or reciprocity. Essentially, it will make it easier for licensed cosmetologists to work in other jurisdictions. After at least seven states pass the bill, cosmetologists in participating states will be able to obtain a multistate license, Note: The Compact is only for licensed cosmetologists and is not available to licensed barbers.
