what type of brush/comb to use, what oils are OK to use with which extensions, and more. Kline suggests adding an explanation of what can and cannot be done with human hair versus synthetic hair. "Even a mini-tutorial on what to do if they decide to go in a swimming pool" is important, she says, "to help protect their newfound locks." Kline also advises blocking out time after the service, as a bonus, to walk clients through the maintenance guide . . . "so you can physically show them how to brush the hair and how to gently and properly clean their scalp with extensions in, if applicable," she says. When retailing post-installation maintenance products, explain why post-care is important for extensions, and then offer product recommendations to maintain the results and to ensure their investment. For example, only certain styling products, shampoos, and conditioners can be used on specific types of extensions. Sulfate-free products are key, especially when it comes to shampoo and conditioner. Also, recommend a good hair oil since extensions don't receive the same nutrients as natural hair. Oiling the ends of the hair will help maintain shine. However you decide to proceed with your hair extension service, Kline says the biggest takeaway is this: "You can increase your business tremendously with a simple conversation on how to add the length your client has been dreaming of; the low lights they have been scared to try; or the fullness your guest with thinning hair craves—while also giving yourself a raise!" Add-Ons for Extensions Additional services are a must for most hair extension services. You want the client to walk away happy and feeling like they just won the lottery with their amazing new hairdo. It is your job to make sure you deliver that to them. So how do you do that? Each of these add-on services helps increase your overall service ticket. Blending the hair extensions: Remember, the goal is to have extensions that look like real hair. If the guest is coming back to you every 6–8 weeks for a move-up appointment, make sure to trim and reshape while you have them in the chair. No one wants to see a "shelf" between natural hair and the extensions. Color matching: Nothing is worse with extensions than having a color that does not blend with your client's natural hair. Ask your client, "Are we coloring your extensions, your natural hair, or are you looking for a completely new look with added dimension today?" Texture matching: Perming the extensions to blend in with a client's natural curl is also an add-on option.
