Why do you love what you do? From a very young age, I knew I had a calling to work with people, but I was not sure in what way. I absolutely love people and could never imagine working in front of a computer all day. I need that human interaction. Where do you find inspiration? I find inspiration in nature around me. I love the aurora borealis, birds, fish, flowers, water, plants, and places around the world. I also get inspiration from Burning Man, when I'm in nature and around like-minded, artistic people. How do you avoid burnout? This is a very difficult question for me. I have been a workaholic since I was 13 and had three jobs to pay for my first car. I find it very difficult to say no. So, over the years I have been close to burnout quite a few times, and then I catch myself in time and give myself some love and take a bit of time off to re-energize myself. As I turn 60 this year, I always take little 2–3- day vacations throughout the year, which helps a lot. What's your best tip for marketing on social media? How you show up on social media is very important. If you love to color, then you should focus on that and avoid posting what you do not like to do. I decided years ago to show cut, color, and style, as I love to do it all. I also share a lot of personal things I like—travel, food, wine—because my audience wants to know that part of me. But sharing personal is not for everyone; you have to look at social media as branding. What's one piece of advice you'd give to a new cosmetologist? Get into this industry for the passion, and the money will come eventually. Be consistent, and never give up your dreams because eventually they will happen. Have fun and be compassionate to others and never try to be someone else. Just put your energy into being you. @sonyadove Sonya Dove 2022 Master Hairstylist Influencer of the Year
