54 indie stylist Volume 3 Issue 1 1860s 1870s 1880s 1890s 1900s 1910s 1920s 1930s 1867—Madam Gardonia from Galveston, Texas, is considered the first known female barber of record. 1890s—Louisa Grosse is the Proprietress of the Lady Barbers' Association, 65 Chancery Lane, London, England. 1924—Female barbers are allowed to join the Barbers' Union. 1894—Charlotte "Lottie" Chettle is laughed out of Court 9, Queen's Bench Division of the High Court of Justice in the Strand for announcing she was a barber. 1922—Lorena Upper, a barber who owns a barbershop, is charged under the "red light" law on the allegation she is using rooms in the building at 309 Holly Street, Bellingham, Washington, for "immoral purposes." She is fined $300 and prohibited from using her shop for 6 months. She denies the charges. "Female Barbers at Work."
