Educational, inspirational, and just plain fun, attending even one show each year can fire you up and make you remember what an amazing community you're a part of. Attending a trade show can be a bit of an investment, so if you're going to take the leap, you should do everything you can to get the most out of your trip. That means preparing in advance, staying on task, and enjoying every minute. Here are some tips I've learned—a few the hard way—to have an amazing trade show experience. CHOOSE A SHOW OR TWO If you plan to attend more than one show this year, check the dates and locations of the shows. Most have websites that post information well in advance, so make sure dates don't overlap or fall on a time that's inconvenient for you. Also consider the time of year it's held. For example, IBS New York is in March. It's one of my favorites, but I've gotten stuck there twice because of snow. I won't complain about a few extra days in NYC, but it's an expensive city—an extra night or two can double your travel budget. Shows in Las Vegas are always in the summer. Not much we can do about that, but just know it's gonna be hot. Finally, make sure the show is for professionals only. TAKE CARE OF TRAVEL ASAP If you plan and purchase in advance, you will save money. Trade shows normally offer early-bird discounts, so take advantage of those. Airline tickets are also cheaper the further in advance you book your fl ight. And every trade show I've ever attended reserves discounted blocks of hotel rooms specifi cally for show attendees. Book your hotel rooms directly through the show's website to get those discounts. tyler nix/unsplash THE BIZ
