52 indie stylist Volume 2 Issue 3 advertisement ca r e e r s Tell us about the evolution of Ulta Beauty. In my 12-plus years, we transformed from 300 to more than 1,200 locations, became publicly traded, and were led by a number of CEOs. We've also transformed and optimized our salons with the highest commission in the industry, a guest-centric menu, and custom education catered to meet each stylist where they are in their career journey. What was your journey to your current position? I started as an Ulta stylist and soon applied for a position as a technical trainer. The company was in a crazy growth phase, so I helped open and train the salon staff at new locations. I quickly began supporting "train the trainer sessions," marketing photo shoots, and attending fashion week—all while working behind the chair 80 percent of the time. This time in my career was pivotal, because I always wanted to change the perception of this industry—to help elevate the mindset of people who see a licensed cosmetologist as "just a hairdresser." To do that, I needed to broaden my reach and step away from working behind the chair. Do you feel there is growth potential for Ulta stylists now? Absolutely. Whether you want to be a career stylist, a leader of people, an educator, a multi- unit district leader, or want to expand into the retail side of the beauty industry, there are so many paths to explore—and even more support and development opportunities to help you get there! What do you love about Ulta? Hands down, I love the culture—and not just our amazing education team, but truly the organization as a whole. Sarah Dahl Director, Services Education @sarahelainehair What is the best part of what you do? Helping people grow in this industry is the best thing I do. When I decided to go into cosmetology, it wasn't the most popular decision with my family. I think that perception is something many people face when they decide to start in the beauty industry. Specifically, I love that no two days are the same. We are constantly evolving and looking at ways to improve. What are some highlights of Ulta's revamped education initiative? We meet stylists where they are in their journey—there is no judgment—and we offer three tiers of education: Essentials, Mastery, and Elite. Each contains four days of hands-on education in the areas of hair color, lightening, haircutting, styling, and extensions for all textures of hair. We also share business-building skills that help our stylists implement their knowledge to grow a successful business. Additionally, we have a team of more than 100 district and regional educators who lead our in-person and virtual education classes and support stylists in their local district through regular visits.
