This common response to a "bad" haircut or other hair-related mishaps is usually intended to offer comfort, but the sentiment severely downplays the impact a person's hair can have on their well-being, quality of life, and self-esteem. As a hairstylist, you're certainly aware of the close connection between hair and emotional health. However, you may not know that this phenomenon is not only exempli ed through life experiences, such as drastic postbreakup hair transformations or the panic a client might feel after chopping their hair short for the rst time, but also through legitimate scienti c studies. According to NYU Langone Health, the most common type of hair loss is androgenetic alopecia, a chronic disorder that results in the loss of some or all the hair on both the scalp and body. The hereditary disease affects more than 50 million men and 30 million women in the US and is commonly referred to as male- or female-pattern hair loss. 1 There are also many other reasons for hair loss, including side effects from chemotherapy treatment, thinning or balding hair from age, traction alopecia, overprocessed hair, stress, and hormone changes.
