associated-professionals.com 27 inding just any job can be as easy as answering an ad and getting an interview. But with a little forethought, research, and preparation, you can land your dream job instead! As a beauty professional, there are several career paths and work environments available to you, so you have a lot of options when it comes to employment. Why not take some time to create a wish list, whittle down your list to the top contenders, do some research, and create a list of questions for the interviewer before your interview? Use the following "prep steps" to flip the script and land your dream job. STEP 1: CREATE YOUR WISH LIST To land your ideal job, really take the time to consider the types of work you want to do (initially and moving forward)—and the environment you'd like to work in. It's also important to make a list of what you don't want in a job. Keep in mind that the more specific you are with your answers, the clearer your "dream job" vision will become. Begin creating your wish list by considering your: • Long- and short-term goals. Where do you see yourself in one, five, or 10 years? Are you looking for advancement opportunities? Do you want to build a large clientele? How much money do you hope to make? Creating a list of one-year, five- year, and 10-year goals will allow you to create a vision of your ideal career path. Keep in mind that you can update your goals as often as you'd like. • Ideal work environment. Do you want to work in a salon, a spa, or maybe a resort? Are you looking to build a loyal clientele, or are you more adventurous and willing to work in an environment where you may see clients only once each year, such as resorts and cruise ships? Do you see yourself working for a small intimate shop or a large professional spa? Do you want to work in the city? A more rural area? Is the commute to work an issue for you? Do you thrive in a relaxed atmosphere, or do you need structure? Do you want to build friendships, or do you like a separation of professional and private life? Creating a clear picture of the type of company culture you want to work in is key to finding happiness in the workplace. • Wishlist. After considering your long- and short-term goals and ideal work environment, spend some time considering some other ideal employment situations. For example, do you want/need flextime, full-time, or part- time hours? Do you desire training? Do you require health benefits? What is your ideal starting pay? By creating a list of all your "wants," you will really begin to understand your non-negotiable and negotiable job requirements. STEP 2: LIST POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS Now that you have created a clear vision of your dream job, make a list of potential employers in your ideal location. Compare your list of employment possibilities with your wish list and non-negotiables to fine-tune your search. Once you've narrowed your list, you're ready to do a little sleuthing. STEP 3: GET THE INSIDE SCOOP Now comes the fun part—garnering as much information as possible about each company on your list of potential employers. During your research, your goal is to learn about each company's culture (the vibe of the company), its philosophy about work/life balance, and its reputation. You're really searching for anything and everything you can about a company to shed light on possible opportunities and challenges. Remember, due diligence is not only a good indicator of whether a business is a good fit for you, it also shows a potential employer you are interested enough in them to do your research. To learn as much as possible about a potential employer:
