Now that volume products and techniques are available, an artist can even charge $300–$400. In large cities like New York, salons can charge upward of $600, yet the product cost to the salon is only a few dollars for some adhesive and fibers. Monthly fills range from $75 to $150, requiring less product and time. After basic training and a bit of experience, extension pros can find advanced training and learn techniques for greater speed with no loss in quality. Client satisfaction improves as well, because the lashes look better and last longer. Professionals benefit financially, because they have the time to see more clients every day. In the future, professionals will be subject to beauty trends and countertrends. As styles change, anyone aiming for a long-term career must be prepared. This will require regular refresher training and an attitude always open to change. In time, the industry goal will probably center on creating a look that is convincingly natural. This may yet happen, even though the current client preference is for a more dramatic look. FINDING—AND KEEPING—CLIENTS Many extension experts work in established, full- service salons that offer a solid environment in which to gain new clients through the patrons visiting for other services—not to mention the hairstylists, nail professionals, and receptionists. People seek out extensions for a variety of reasons. Some prefer them so they can exercise, use saunas, or perspire without having to apply eye makeup afterward. Others love more glamorous styles that allow them to feel beautiful day and night without having to fuss with applying strip lashes. Some do not like to wear any makeup at all, and they use extensions to look a bit more polished. More men are now opting to try them too. Client loyalty is remarkably strong. A good stylist can end up being "stalked" by their lash- junkie clients, who beg to be squeezed in at all hours of the day. When a particularly good expert is not available, her clients will often prefer to wait weeks or months for a minor touch-up rather than try out an equally well-trained expert from the same salon. Also, clients will return to their beloved salon for refills like clockwork. No one knows for sure what causes such devotion, but estheticians should certainly take advantage of this beautiful—and profitable—craze. l ash out
