J o i n at a s so c iate d h a i rp rofe s sio n a ls .c o m 3 Stop waiting for change and start making it I was so moved by our interview with hair artist Shanna Anise, this issue's cover stylist, that it compelled me take a moment out of my crazy day to ask myself, am I living my most authentic life? What does success mean to me? Her answer to that question is so simple, but so meaningful: "Success is having a fulfilled life that leaves a mark." As a mom of three and a career that can be demanding at times, it's sometimes easy to lose my way and get caught up in the deadlines, numbers, report cards, and all life's little dramas. I encourage you to read Shanna's interview; her story starts on page 24. I'm confident it will make you reflect and realize (or reimagine) what success looks like to you. And if you don't like the way things are going, I also want to encourage you to "be the change you want to see." I truly believe that with this new era of COVID, we've been given a gift. (I never thought I would share that sentiment, but stay with me.) Your state's governing bodies have probably learned more about the way you work with clients than they ever thought possible, watching the services you perform and the fashion in which you perform them. Right now, they're paying attention to you and your fellow hair professionals, and you have their ear. In "A Call to Action: Advocate for Regulation" (page 34), nail salon owner Jaime Schrabeck calls on every one of us to take this moment and advocate for the profession we love. You may agree with everything she says, or nothing at all, but you can't deny there is an open stage, so let's get on it and sing our hearts out! Tracy Donley Executive Director Associated Hair Professionals @tracy.donley from the ahp executive director At Associated Hair Professionals (AHP), our goal is your success. AHP believes hairstylists and barbers should be regarded with the admiration and appreciation they deserve, and the states to know unequivocally they are educated, respected image- makers, capable of changing people lives with the work they perform. Check out our Legislative Toolkit. This resource is designed to give you the basic knowledge and templates to let your voice be heard.
